Dear Ms. Rodriguez,

I am currently a first year student at the City College of New York and I am writing to apply for the STEM program within your organization. My experience with science hasn’t always been the greatest. I started learning science in the 4th grade, but it was more like an introduction rather than actual content. Growing up, I remember having a hard time understanding the variables involved when making experiments like manipulative, independent and dependent variables. I, however, was always interested in the hands-on part of science. For example, experiments and the science behind inventions like how they work, what they are powered by, and so on. In the 6th grade, I started diving more into science, and found a profound interest in it. To be more specific, I naturally got attracted to the nature aspect of it.

The earth is a part of us, and I think it is imperative that we take care of it. The earth is full of surprises and that makes it so much more special. There’s so much that we are yet to discover and it’s just  a beautiful mystery. For example, when I was walking by, I saw the cement lifting up, and through the smallest crack, there was grass. It just hit me how much damage we are doing instead of protecting it. Mother Nature is fascinating therefore we should work with it rather than against it. As for the science community, I hope to help out the people who need it and the world. Our Earth is currently struggling and although I can’t physically save it, I hope to have some involvement in making it a better place for everyone. As a Hispanic, it is sometimes hard to get in these organizations since we don’t always have the opportunities to do so. SHPE firmly believes in empowering the Hispanic community “to realize its fullest potential … through STEM Awareness, access, support and development.” I believe this organization can help me, help society through the support and knowledge they will provide me with.

By the end of the semester I hope I’m able to elaborate on certain topics. Currently, I’m pretty good at expressing my thoughts. Sometimes though, I leave things out thinking it’s self explanatory. I want to be able to change that and be able to expand my thoughts. In order to achieve these goals, I need to organize and plan my writing and ideas more. Lastly, I need to start getting in the habit of  revising my work, since I always mess up on silly things like grammar and spelling.

Sincerely,

Diana Yauri
