Final Draft + Rubric

The science community consists of many intelligent minds. From new discoveries to developed technology, science is always improving. Two out of many scientists dared to take their discoveries to new levels. Cloning is a very sensitive topic and often individuals are misinformed of what cloning can do for the human race. In this scientific/ journalist report, experts go into detail about the different aspects of cloning.

Doctors Jerry L. Hall and Robert Stillman are both experienced individuals in the field of science. Dr. Jerry L. Hall received his Ph.D in “1974 from the University of Mississippi, then completed a three-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.” Hall’s main field of interest and what he spent most of his time doing was the laboratory director of the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Genetic Testing. Similar to Dr. Hall, Dr. Robert Stillman earned his medical degree at Georgetown University. He then “completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University and a two-year fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at Harvard University. Dr. Stillman is a clinical professor at Georgetown medical school’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology” and has gained many awards. They are indeed professionals and know what they are talking about.

Additionally, this article is to inform its readers of the discoveries that were made and the possibility to better humanity and benefit them. Both of these scientists believe that there are benefits to cloning but they also understand why the people would deny it. Dr. Hall and Stillman speak of two different types of cloning: therapeutic and reproductive cloning. These cloning are often misunderstood by the public. Because they are such a controversial topic, the audience that this article would be directed to everyone, but it would definitely catch politicians attention. But it would also catch women’s attention since reproductive cloning is mentioned. What that essentially is, is making a twin, unnaturally of course.

This article is more of a scientific report and journalistic article together. The way the article is written is to inform the readers but also to record what they did and the process of doing it. These scientists made sure they took note of every step and explained it thoroughly. Especially when they talked about the different types of cloning. Therapeutic cloning can be very beneficial to people who have special disabilities. In the article it was mentioned that “Therapeutic cloning produces embryonic stem cells that are used for medical research to treat or reverse diseases such as Parkinson’s, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and spinal cord injuries.”

This article was written in 1993, a time where technology was beginning to take off but people weren’t as liberal. Cloning was something to be considered a sin. It was like taking someone’s identity and making it your own. People were also close minded and did not fully grasp the benefits that cloning could have. During this time the World Wide Web was being  placed and 2g phones were becoming more common. We were advancing as a society, so hearing this wasn’t that out of the ordinary but definitely caught people’s attention.

All in all, it is important to be aware of the information we are given before forming an opinion. I wasn’t even aware of the different types of cloning until I read this article. Even though this report is a bit outdated it is still relevant 20+ years in since technology is advancing and can become a reality sooner or later. It can become a reality and can eventually help many people.
